Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD), also known as keratotorus is a corneal degenerative disorder. Keratotorus is sometimes confused with keratoconus, however both are different diseases. Typically there is no pain in pellucid marginal degeneration, unlike keratoconus and there is only vision loss and no other symptoms of keratoconus too. Rarely PMD can also present with pain and sudden loss of vision, which occurs with corneal perforation.

Pellucid marginal degeneration is characterized by bilateral clear ectasia (thinning) in the peripheral and inferior part of the cornea. Some cases may also present with the diseases in only one eye.

PVR PROSE Treatment for Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD)
PVR PROSE devices are a size of nickel in the shape of transparent domes. These devices are made of plastic that’s permeable to gas. This gas permeable plastic allows airflow through it so that the oxygen can reach the ocular surface.

PVR PROSE devices spare the cornea and rest on the sclera of the eye. Sclera is relatively insensitive area of the eye. By sparing the cornea, it helps in avoiding any further damage to the corneal surface while providing a healthy environment for the cornea to heal.

The purpose of and benefits of PVR PROSE Treatment include:
– Improve blurry vision by transmitting a sharper image to the retina of the eye by masking the corneal irregularities
– Support healing of the cornea and reduce symptoms by restoring healthy ocular surface environment
– Prevent damage to the corneal surface by guarding it against injuries from eyelids and environment

The patients with PMD benefit from PVR PROSE Treatment as it vaults over the damaged optical surface. This avoids any damage to the corneal surface from the environment and also from the eyelids. The PVR PROSE Treatment devices are filled with saline that creates a fluid reservoir between the lens and the cornea, which continuously bathes the corneal surface with oxygenated artificial tears.

PVR PROSE devices are unique to the patients. Consult the experts at Global Complex Eye Care to get a PVR PROSE device designed specifically to your eye condition that meets your specific treatment goals.
